Image Classification (language: R)
Image classification via Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Using the keras package to construct the model, a series of filters were used to extract features from a particular data set to train a CNN model to recognize images that fall into one of three categories. Specifically, the functions used in this project utilizes Tensorflow tools - which usesvectors as tensors to create the structure of the neural network.
p5.js is a creative coding library used to introduce text-based coding to beginners around the world. I have created tutorials for the p5.js learn site that focused on accessibility, creativity and computational thinking. During this project I collaborated with various writers by providing revisions and feedback on tutorials for the p5.js learn page - feedback was focused on accessibility and readability for beginners
Understanding how the material properties of bone tissue from the various forms of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) differ will allow us to tailor treatment regimens for affected patients. To this end, we characterized the bone structure and material properties of two mouse models .. in which bone fragility is due to a genetic defect in collagen type I and a defect in osteoblast matrix mineralization, respectively. Bones ... were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic imaging (FTIRI), microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), histology, and biochemical analysis.
NYC DOE has trained over 2,025 teachers in 825 schools, reaching almost 177,000 students in grades K-12 and counting! Layla Quiñones and José Olivares will discuss and answer questions about expanding data science curriculum across disciplines and various formats (full course, curriculum, modules) with an emphasis on increasing accessibility for all students within New York City school district.
The 2019 Processing Foundation Fellowships sponsored nine projects from around the world that expanded the p5.js and Processing softwares and nurtured their communities. This year, we collaborated with the New York City Department of Education’s CS4All Initiative, to support two Teaching Fellows, who are Computer Science teachers in the Software Engineering Program of New York City Public Schools. Here is the first interview with Teaching Fellow Layla Quinones, in conversation with Director of Advocacy Johanna Hedva.

My teaching experience includes over 15 years of service in New York City Public Schools. In graduate school specialized in Physics Education, studied how misconceptions can affect students' understanding of science concepts. I quickly turned my eye to Computer Science Education after receiving training in curriculum development and CS pedagogy from CS4ALL, UpperlineCode (Giant Machines), CUNY Graduate Center, and others.

For 10 years, I have been focusing on expanding CS education offerings in NYC Public Schools by writing and refining curriculum, and developing and facilitating professional learning sessions for NYC public school teachers. I amplified my impact by training hundreds of teachers in AI Literacy and emerging technologies. My trainings emphasized topics related to equity and social justice, so that students understand how CS can empower them to drive social change within their communities.

With my background CS and Physics, Data Science was a natural next step. In the last 5 years I have been developing my expertise in Data Science through my coursework in CUNY Graduate School and my role at CS4ALL. I translated that expertise into a Data Science Fellowship program and a Data Science curriculum for NYC Public School teachers. I have also been able to increase the efficiency of my team by automating tasks related to teacher recruitment and placement by developing dashboards using Google Sheets and Python.
